Mikkel Borg Bjergsø was a maths and physics teacher in Copenhagen. He lived a stones throw from the Carlsberg brewery but upon discovering US influenced IPA's he started homebrewing... Early on in Mikkel's brewing career the original Beer Geek Breakfast won Ratebeer's best stout (2006) which was a huge breakthrough for international sales and recognition for the brewery. Four years after that I (Mitch) distinctly remember my first experience of Mikkeller and it was an iteration of the very same Beer Geek series... Here's what I wrote about it back in 2010 for a World Cup Beer Swap, needless to say I loved it!
According to Ratebeer one of the most expensive coffees in the world is used to brew this [Mikkeller Beer Geek Brunch Weasel] Imperial Stout, so called because the coffee beans are previously digested by weasel-like civet cats. It pours a rich dark chocolate colour, almost black, with a fantastic caramel head. Swirling the thick beer around the glass left some great legs on the glass. Strong roasted coffee & chocolate aromas smacked me in the face.
The first sip, almost syrupy texture with a gentle carbonation, gorgeous coffee flavour, rich dark malt and a real sticky sweet finish. It’s like drinking dessert, a velvety smooth espresso & chocolate mousse. This really is a stunning beer.
Euroboozer have been working with Mikkeller as the exclusive UK importer since 2018. 2019 was a huge year for Mikkeller, especially in the UK. They moved from one to two bars in London and 2020 will see one of them convert to brewpub. Thom Hill also started as the UK sales manager for Mikkeller and has been out and about at events and customers up and down the country. If you'd more information about the beers, or have an idea to put on an event, he's the man you should speak to... email Thom@Mikkeller.dk.
